Georgia football’s offense has primarily been vanilla and predictable most of the season. Here are three coaches that could be intriguing candidates to liven up the offense in 2020.

Georgia football may need a new offensive coordinator in 2020 if the Dawgs offensive woes continue.

The Georgia Bulldogs have not been as impressive or dominant on offense as many thought they would have been.

Last year’s offensive coordinator, Jim Chaney, left for Tennessee, and many around the nation thought that new offensive coordinator James Coley would open up the offense more and get a more explosive, high-scoring offense on the field.

However, at a point in the season, we have yet to see any improvement in those areas when comparing last season to this season.

The offense has looked very much the same, and maybe even a little less explosive under Coley.

There could be any number of reasons for this, chief among them the fact that the wide receiving corps is largely leaning on two true freshmen this season.

But still, in games against teams that have respectable defenses, the Dawgs offense has not looked great, putting up just 23, 17, and 21 points against Notre Dame, South Carolina, and Kentucky, respectively.

Those kinds of point totals are not going to cut it when it comes to playing teams like LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Clemson.

They might not even cut it against the likes of Florida and Auburn. The Bulldogs put up many points against bad teams like they are supposed to, but the bland play-calling by Coley does not cut it when facing upper-tier opponents.

It’s not just the scoring either though; the Bulldogs are not top 10 in any major total offense statistic.

In total offense, they rank 20th overall. Breaking that down into four sub-categories, the Bulldogs rank 22nd in total yards, 12th in yards per play, 30th in offensive touchdowns, and 20th in yards per game.

All of the teams listed above are at least in the top 10, and often in the top five, in each of these offensive metrics.

Furthermore, the Dawgs are 68th overall in passing offense. No matter how good your run game is, in today’s football world, you have to better than 68th in the nation at passing the ball.

And considering the Dawgs relatively lack of passing firepower, they need to have a top-five rushing attack to accompany it, but they don’t. Their rushing offense is just 14th in the nation at this point.

When your rushing offense is just good, not great, and your passing offense is nothing special, there needs to be a change made if you want to be able to compete with the top teams in the nation.

Head coach Kirby Smart needs to replace current offensive coordinator James Coley with someone who is more innovative and produces more high-powered offense.

Doing this, and combining it with one of the best defenses in the nation, could help push the Bulldogs to a national title and should help the Bulldogs in recruiting.

There are a lot of high powered offenses in the lower levels of college football and lesser conferences that Smart could look at to find a bright offensive mind ready to take the next step of their career.

Coming to Georgia and running an explosive offense would both help their career and the Bulldogs football team.

Dawn of the Dawg site editor and expert Savannah Leigh recently explored why former offensive coordinator Mike Bobo could and should return to Athens after this season. To see this article, please click here.

While this is an interesting option, and certainly a possibility, I thought I’d look outside of Athens connections and try to find some good options that could take the Georgia offense to the next level.

You have to think that if the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator spot becomes open that it would be a highly valued position considering the elite talent that comes through there and the blue-chip status that the university itself holds in the college football world.

With that in mind, here are three intriguing options that could take the Bulldog offense to a new level.
