Georgia Football: Never doubt Jake Fromm, or the Dawgs
By Eric Taylor
After much criticism over the last couple of weeks, Georgia football has proven their doubters wrong again.
A lot has been said about Kirby Smart, James Coley, Jake Fromm, and the Georgia football program this season. Not all of it has been positive. In fact, a good bit of it has been negative. Some fans even booed the coaches during the Kentucky game. I have even criticized Kirby’s conservative ways and questioned Coley’s play-calling on more than one occasion.
However, I don’t think anyone is criticizing them now, nor should they be doubting them.
Jake Fromm just played the best game of the season. He completed 25 of his 30 pass attempts for 279 yards and one touchdown. He also won his first game while attempting 30 passes or more. He also led the offense to a 12 of 18 third-down conversion rate.

The performance by Georgia’s junior quarterback prompted his head coach to embrace him after the game, saying, “Don’t ever doubt Jake Fromm”.
That’s not to say every throw by Fromm was perfect on the day. He had Demetris Robertson running down the left sideline for what should have been a touchdown in the first quarter, but he underthrew him by about three yards. Robertson had gotten behind the defense and if the ball had been in front of him he would have scored.
The throw almost resulted in an interception.
Fromm also missed a wide-open Eli Wolf in the endzone on the same drive, instead choosing to go to Charlie Woerner and the ball got batted away. Two wasted opportunities to get six on the first drive.
Georgia’s offensive line had a lot to do with Fromm’s day. They did not allow a single sack to the Gators who came into the game leading all SEC teams in sacks. It was a heck of an effort with the talented pass rushers that Florida has. Isaiah Wilson and Andrew Thomas were huge for the Dawgs.
They did allow Zuniga to get in the backfield on the second play of the game and get a tackle for loss on Swift though. In fact, the offensive line gave up six tackles for loss against the Gators.
It was tough sledding for the running game against Florida. Georgia totaled just 119 yards on the ground. D’Andre Swift carried it 25 times for 86 yards, averaging just 3.4 yards per carry. Jake Fromm actually averaged more yards per carry, rushing 3 times for 12 yards, and averaging four yards per carry.
Brian Herrien was another offensive player that really shined against Florida. He got 11 total touches for 61 yards, including this tremendous one-handed circus catch on 1st and 15 in the 3rd quarter:
Coley called his best game of the season, maybe having that extra week to work on things made the difference or, maybe it was having Lawrence Cager back.
Cager was playing in his first game since being injured against South Carolina. Cager is the receiver that Fromm trusts most and it showed as he had the best game of any Georgia receiver this season, and being only the second receiver to go over 100 yards this season. He caught seven passes for 132 yards and a touchdown.
It only took Cager three plays to show that he was going to be huge in this game. On 3rd and 14, he caught a ball on a crossing route about four yards from the line of scrimmage and gained ten more yards after the catch for the first down.
Cager would later score on a play-action pass where Fromm was able to hit him wide open behind the Gator defense for a 52-yard touchdown.
Cager was not the only player to make his return against the Gators. Jordan Davis and Tyson Campbell also made their returns in Jacksonville. Davis had two tackles and combined with Malik Herring for a sack. Campbell did not show up on the box score stats.
Speaking of Georgia’s defense though, they once again held their opponent without a rushing touchdown and under 100 yards rushing. Florida totaled just 21 rushing yards for the game. They were also able to sack Trask twice for a loss of 29 yards.
Georgia also got another excellent outing from the best kicker in college football, Rodrigo Blankenship. He was three for three on the day and made his only extra-point attempt.
All in all, this was a great team win and the kind of game Smart, Coley, and Fromm can hang their hats on. You proved a lot of people wrong today guys. Keep on chopping that wood. Missouri is up next.
