CBS writers once again call Georgia football overrated
By Eric Taylor
Earlier in the year, Chip Patterson of CBS called Georgia football overrated. Well, CBS is at it again, this time with a different writer, Tom Fornelli.
Despite the Georgia football team being featured on a number of the SEC on CBS premier games this year, it seems their writers are not fond of the love shown to the No. 4 Bulldogs by the College Football Playoff committee.
Georgia is the only one-loss team in the top four of the newest playoff rankings, and that seemed to bother more than a few folks. It’s not the first time CBS has trolled the Dawgs, and it probably won’t be the last.
This is what Tom Fornelli of CBS had to say about Georgia being ranked No. 4 in the latest College Football Playoff Poll:
"The SEC: It just means more … unless it’s a loss to South Carolina. Then it doesn’t mean anything. Seriously, let’s go through the teams in this week’s top 10, according to the CFP Selection Committee. Of those 10 teams, four don’t have a loss. The other six teams have six losses between them. Here’s a list of the teams that have beaten those six: No. 1 LSU, No. 8 Minnesota, No. 12 Auburn, No. 24 Kansas State, USC … South Carolina.Somehow, the team with the worst of those losses would be in the College Football Playoff if the season ended right now. Of course, the committee will point to Georgia’s wins over No. 11 Florida and No. 16 Notre Dame as reasons for ranking it so high, and I’m not dismissing those wins. Only few teams in the country have two better wins than those on their resume."
Here’s the problem with Fornneli’s take; he mentions that you can’t find very many teams with two quality wins that match Georgia, but still persists that the one loss to South Carolina means more than beating two top 16 teams.
A team can have a bad week, they can lose focus, there is a million reason for a team to lose a game. If you base your entire observation of a team on their loan loss and not their great victories it shows that you are looking to feed an agenda.
Their lone loss to South Carolina does look bad, however, that does not take away from their SEC best and No. 5 overall defense. It does not take away that they have three shutouts this year, two against SEC opponents. It does not take away from the fact that no one has scored more than 20 points on the Dawgs this year.
Georgia is averaging just 23.5 points and 368.5 yards per game against ranked opponents. However, they are also holding their ranked opponents to 17 points and 299.5 yards per game. They rank No. 2 in points per game vs ranked opponents and No. 3 in yards per game vs ranked opponents. Ohio State is the only team that is ranked above them in both.
It seems if you look at it logically, Georgia deserves to be where they are. They have earned that spot. They have done what a lot of other teams have not been able to do and their body of work speaks for itself.
There is a lot of football left to play and all of this will work itself out. So people can think Georgia is overrated all they want to. At the end of the day, rankings do not matter, wins do.
