The Georgia football mascot Uga is one of the most beloved and pampered animals in the world, and PETA can go pound sand if they think that’s about to change.

If you’re a Georgia football fan, you knew this was eventually coming. The animal rights group PETA has called for the University of Georgia to retire their live English Bulldog mascot, Uga, stating that he “looks miserable”, per Atlanta’s WSB TV.

PETA has also recently called for the retirement of live mascots at Texas A&M (Reveille the Collie), Mississippi State (Bully the Bulldog), Colorado (Ralphie the Buffalo), and even Oklahoma’s Sooner Schooner, which is pulled by a team of live horses.

While I can’t speak for the treatment of mascots at other schools (and I’m sure they are treated with great care, respect and love) anyone who has been around the University of Georgia knows the absolute pampering and careful treatment given to Uga.

Uga, who has several times been named the top mascot in all of college football, leads a life many of us wish we had. What the narrow-minded clods at PETA fail to recognize is that many dog breeds are working breeds with specific tasks they are bred to perform. It may be hunting, herding animals, therapy, guiding the disabled, or even protection of property.

Uga’s job is simple. Be the face of the athletic program. Enjoy the adoration of millions of fans. Lay in the air-conditioned dog house and mug for the cameras. Meet thousands upon thousands of young fans whose joy is immeasurable when given the opportunity to simply pet the Georgia mascot.

Tough life, huh?

And what does Uga receive in return for living up to that job description? A royal life we should all be so lucky to live.

Don’t get me wrong, PETA is a valuable organization and it’s admirable to stand up for the rights of animals who obviously can’t speak for themselves. But how about focusing on animals that are actually abused or mistreated. It’s obvious no one at PETA has spent any time with the people who live with and care for mascots such as Uga.

I think it’s time for college fans all over the country to call for PETA to mind their own business until they see an animal actually being mistreated rather than being shown absolute love and careful attention.
