Georgia baseball won its fourth series of the 2020 season this past weekend by sweeping the Massachusetts Minutemen.
Well, we tried not to pay attention, because we thought it might get ugly. And it did. Over the weekend Georgia baseball swept the UMass Minutemen in three games and outscored them 27-2 at Foley Field.
We tried to look the other way by writing about Equestrian and Track & Field. Georgia sports that deserve covering, yet do not get a lot of coverage.
After all, the Bulldogs had swept then No. 17 Georgia Tech and outscored them 27-8, also in three games. The Yellow Jackets fell to No. 22. Isn’t that simply awful?

Georgia then lost only their second game of the season to an always stout Georgia Southern team 6-3. A second game against the Eagles was postponed due to rain, sparing them a trek to North Augusta while also giving the Bulldogs a day of rest and opportunity to get angry over series game one and season loss number two.
It may be that Georgia Southern is UGA’s toughest opponent to date, that they are an under the radar Sun Belt sleeper. If you’re not aware, the Eagles have made it to the NCAA tournament 13 times, and head coach Rodney Hennon is in his 21st season.
Not to dwell on UMass talent or lack thereof, they are a Div. I team, and they flat-out ran into a buzz saw.
In game one UMass kept it scoreless until the eighth inning, when Georgia ticked off the only five runs of the game. In the 16-2 game 2 blowout Georgia led 10-1 after two innings. Game three was protracted torment, with the Bulldogs scoring one run each in the first, third and fourth before opening it up with three runs in the sixth.
UMass next plays Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday the 13th. Whether or not they returned to Amherst, which I expect they did, could their luck get any worse?
With another two games vs Georgia Southern followed by a three game away series versus the detestable Florida Gators, one can only hope Georgia did not needlessly fire off a ton of runs that might better have been saved for later.
Yet if pitching and defense remain as stingy as they have been, the Bulldogs might not need many runs. But let’s go ahead and score them anyway just to play it safe. As always, Go Dawgs!
