Leadership Award: Rayshaun Hammonds

Rayshaun Hammonds wasn’t a particularly great leader for most of the season. Despite all the physical tools and having the skills to back it up, Hammonds game had lapses that would cause him to fade behind other players on the roster, never fulfilling his potential as a team leader. Last year, he allowed himself to play second-fiddle to Nic Claxton and for much of the 2019-20 season, he let Anthony Edwards claim the spotlight.

Hammonds finally began fulfilling that potential late in the season, and look what happened? Georgia had a stretch of three wins in four games before beating Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament. In Georgia’s last 10 games, Hammonds scored in double figures eight times.

Most often, Hammonds would score most of his points in the early minutes, providing a spark that would light up the whole team and force an opposing defense out of its game plan. Hammonds has become the backbone of the Georgia basketball heading into his senior season.
