One of those anything’s Buccaneers fans hope can happen is whatever can fix their running back situation. Incumbent starter Peyton Barber is entering free agency and isn’t expected to resign. Second-year player Ronald Jones had a pretty good season, and he might develop into a full-time starting running back, but he isn’t quite there yet.
This could be Gurley’s last chance to be a starting running back in the league. He has more experience than Jones, and everyone knows what a healthy Gurley is capable of.
Worst case scenario, Gurley isn’t able to prove himself healthy enough of a starting running back, but he can become a quality backup behind Jones while helping the young running back reach his potential.
Does Tampa Bay and Tom Brady even want Gurley and his red flags? There are other free-agent running backs and a few in the draft capable of starting for the Buccaneers on day one. Brady didn’t come to Tampa Bay to build a team that might compete in the future. Brady is going to want to win in 2020. Gurley might not be the running back he thinks he can win with.
Gurley’s other option is to retire. Five years as a starter is a good career for a running back in the NFL. Gurley has certainly earned a lot of money through his career. 7,494 career yards from scrimmage with 70 touchdowns, on top of three All-Pro selections, is a career to be proud of.
