College Gameday: Georgia at Alabama

College Gameday will be in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on the morning of September 19. Everyone knows that.

Right now, Georgia vs. Alabama is the most anticipated matchup of the 2020 season. Because it’s so early in the season, both teams will probably be undefeated. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide each begin the year with a neutral site non-conference game, so each could already have a big win under their belts. The loser will be behind the 8-ball in their respective divisional races and will probably need to win out in order to make the SEC Championship Game in December.

The story of the Georgia/Alabama rivalry in 2020 is one everyone around the nation surely knows. Kirby Smart, former Georgia player and then defensive coordinator at Alabama leaves Tuscaloosa to become head coach at his alma mater. Smart brings Georgia to the cusp of a national championship three-straight years but fall to Alabama in Atlanta in two of them. Alabama head coach Nick Saban has still never lost to a former assistant coach.

But, no former assistant has their team playing at such a high level as Kirby Smart and this is Georgia’s third crack at Alabama in the Kirby Smart era. One of Nick Saban’s former assistants is bound to beat him at some point and this could be the year.

Besides that premier storyline, there’s also the questions about Georgia’s offense and Alabama’s defense. Alabama’s 2019 defense and Georgia’s 2019 offense are both team’s worst in recent memory and are aiming at making huge improvements in 2020. Whichever unit improves the fastest could decide the outcome of the game.
