In some recent UGA football news, the school has announced the team will be holding a “Virtual G-Day” this Saturday in lieu of being able to actually host a spring football game.

Georgia football fans should be glad to hear the latest UGA football news. While there will be no spring football game or accompanying G-Day activities for fans, Kirby Smart wants to hold a virtual version of the event for fans.

With everything going on related to the coronavirus pandemic, this is just the ticket for UGA football fans who are suffering from pigskin withdrawals and cabin fever.

The plan was for the SEC Network to replay last year’s G-Day game in the slot allotted for Georgia, but Kirby Smart had a better idea – replay last year’s electric game against Notre Dame and include some commentary from himself via his Twitter account, @KirbySmartUGA.

“The real catalyst for this came from our head football coach,” said Alan Thomas, Georgia’s senior associate athletic director for external operations, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He was interested in knowing if there was a game we could put on, and he said that he could live tweet during it. We thought it was fantastic. He thought it’d be a way for him to reach out (to fans) and be part of something. That started the wheels turning.”

The idea took off and it was all put together this past week, including adding UGA broadcasters Scott Howard, Eric Zeier and Chuck Dowdle with some live commentary on the UGA Athletics Facebook page.

Great UGA football news for an isolated fanbase

This couldn’t come at a better time for Georgia fans. Most around the state have been cooped up under Shelter-in-Place orders for weeks now, unable to gather with friends for spring practices or to gear up for what could have been another record-breaking G-Day game.

The 2019 game against Notre Dame at Sanford Stadium was a generational experience for many Georgia fans, beyond just having the Bulldogs win the game. It was a well-played, gutsy battle between two of the nation’s top programs. Re-watching the broadcast with some insight from Smart and others will be a great way to recharge the batteries of a news-weary Bulldog nation.
