Georgia football: Non-conference opponents the Bulldogs have never played

Although the Georgia football program is among the oldest in the nation, there are still a few top programs the Bulldogs have never faced.

Georgia football fans love playing an SEC schedule. It is (despite what some may argue) the toughest conference schedule to play in the nation. Yearly contests against old rivals such as Tennessee, Auburn, and Florida are what UGA fans live and die for each season.

But, there are some great non-conference games every season as well. The latest home-and-home series against Notre Dame showed the heart of the Bulldog Nation to the rest of the country. There have been other great non-SEC series against top programs such as Clemson, Colorado and Oklahoma State.

What some Georgia fans may not know is that there are still a lot of good programs in the Power-5 conferences (and a few scattered in other leagues who the Bulldogs have never faced in the entire history of the program.

Some of these schools — Kansas, Northwestern, Air Force, Indiana, Rutgers for example — probably wouldn’t bring a lot of fan interest on the Georgia side of the field. If the Bulldogs were to face any of those teams, it would be a game most would have a novelty interest in watching. An away game to those schools would probably see little in the way of traveling UGA fans.

There are also a few teams that, while probably good games, still wouldn’t hit the top of the list, including Washington State, Minnesota, Utah, Illinois, and Iowa State.

Then there are the teams that it would be really fun to see the Bulldogs face, or that would make a great weekend road trip for fans. Here are some that would be nice to see pop up on a future Georgia football schedule.

Georgia football: Let’s Play These Guys

While not really considered a powerhouse in the Big 12, Kansas State is a fantastic football school. It’s a shame Georgia never got to face the Wildcats while the legendary Bill Snyder was still coaching. Manhattan, Ks. is a perfect football town, and Georgia fans would thoroughly enjoy a trip there for a game.

Playing Iowa would be a great way for fans who still cling to Mark Richt, because Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz is essentially the Richt of the Big Ten. He’s a no-nonsense coach who keeps his cool, doesn’t put up with off-field shenanigans and who receives love and respect from his players. Georgia-Iowa is a long-overdue series.

The Huskies once again became one of the teams to beat in the Pac-12 under head coach Chris Petersen, and although we haven’t seen what Jimmy Lake will do with that program yet, it would still be fun series to see. Husky Stadium in Seattle overlooking the Union Bay is one of the most picturesque settings in all of college football.

This is another program it would be great to see Georgia play for severe reasons. First, with the love and support the armed forces receive among the Bulldog Nation, it would be an opportunity to not only play a great opponent but to give some respect and tribute to the Air Force Acadamy. An away game trip to Colorado Springs would be a nice incentive as well.

For some of the same reasons it would be great to play Air Force, likewise, Army would be a very desirable opponent. Plus, for a program as old and storied as Army, its hard to believe that Georgia has never scheduled the Black Knights. A salute to the men and women in the Army at Sanford Stadium would be thrilling to watch.

Oh, By The Way…

We want to add one more to this list. Not because they are a classic, well-known program, or because there would be some importance in getting to see a legendary stadium. Simply because we’re tired of hearing from them and how they could supposedly win in any conference. Of course, we’re referring to none other than…

Yeah, the UCF Knights. Bring ’em on.

Correction: The Addition of UCF to this list was not meant to imply Georgia had never played them, but rather to wish for a rematch. Georgia is 1-1 all-time against UCF, with the last meeting coming in the 2010 Liberty Bowl.

Let us know which of these teams you’d love to see on a future Georgia football schedule, or which stadiums you’d like to invade as a group of visiting fans in red and black.
