UGA football: 5 greatest Bulldogs who didn’t win a Heisman Trophy
Position: RB
Years Played: 1990-1992
Best Chance at Heisman: 1992
Garrison Hearst was the 1992 2nd runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, and some feel he probably should have been the winner that year.
Hearst finished the 1992 season with 1,547 rushing yards, 324 receiving yards, and 21 combined touchdowns. The first runner-up, San Diego State running back Marshall Faulk, had fewer rushing yards but more total yards from scrimmage. However, Hearst faced much more daunting defenses than did Faulk that season.
The 1992 winner, Miami quarterback Gino Torretta, still has a lot of people scratching their heads. While he did have a great season for a quarterback, playing in the Big East that year wasn’t exactly a murderer’s row of opponents. Hearst clearly meant more to his team in a much more difficult schedule than either of the other Heisman finalists.
Hearst still ranks in the top five of every Georgia rushing statistical category of significance, making him an all-time great who probably should have been celebrated more by the Heisman voters.
