UGA football news: Kendall Milton makes Dean’s List, Bulldog’s post program high GPA

The UGA football team earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.02, which is the highest in program history. True freshman Kendall Milton earned a spot on the Dean’s List.

The 2020 UGA football team hasn’t played a game yet, but it’s already earned a major victory. The Bulldogs set a new school record in the classroom (or virtual classroom) by earning a 3.02 cumulative GPA in the spring semester.

Besides the overall team accolade, early enrollee running back Kendall Milton made the Dean’s List according to his father. Milton already made the perfect first impression with the UGA football fan base last year with his commitment video featuring Todd Gurley. An amazing first semester academically will endear him to fans even more.

Georgia setting a program high GPA this spring is even more impressive given the unique circumstances students faced these past few months. The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close classrooms and move the curriculum online. The swift change could have derailed the squad, but the team persevered.

The accomplishment is likely a major point of pride in the program moving forward. Academics have been a priority for Kirby Smart’s program in recent years as UGA football has fallen under the SEC’s average Academic Progress Rate. The APR for the 2018-19 Bulldog’s hasn’t been released yet.

The good news about academics couldn’t have come at a better time for the program. Thursday, news broke about arrest warrants issued for former UGA football cornerback Deandre Baker. Baker allegedly robbed a group of people of money and valuables at gunpoint at a party along with former Florida Gator defensive back Quinton Dunbar and an unnamed third suspect.

Friday, Baker’s lawyer took to Instagram to claim Baker’s innocence, claiming to have affidavits from other witnesses which dispute the allegations. Baker himself has not at issued a statement, nor has he turned himself into the Miramar Police Department.

Regardless of where Baker’s case goes, UGA football fans should devote more focus to the academic achievements of the 2020 Bulldogs. The high GPA is a huge deal, it shows how devoted the team is and how hard it works.
