Georgia vs. Clemson becomes dormant

Georgia and Clemson met eight times between 1990 and 2014, and these years produced some classics. Both schools had a desire to keep the old rivalry going, but these sporadic home-and-home series never felt like enough.

By April 2018, Clemson head coach was adamant in his wish to revive the series, telling The State he would “absolutely” like to play Georgia every year. UGA athletic director Greg McGarity responded a week later and said he expected such a revival in the “not too distant future.”

Two years after this exchange, the hopes of Swinney, McGarity, and long-time fans of both schools have been realized. Georgia and Clemson are slated to play each other six times from 2021-to-2033. The upcoming meetings include two home-and-home series’ and a pair of neutral site games. The longest break between games is just four years.

The revival begins next season in Charlotte, N.C. of all placed. Georgia and Clemson begin their seasons at Bank of America Stadium. In 2024, Georgia and Clemson meet in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The home-and-home series’ are in 2029-2030 and 2032-2033.

The Georgia-Clemson rivalry is back from the dead. But how was that possible? What changes to the landscape of college football allowed Georgia and Clemson to revive their rivalry?
