New offensive coordinator Todd Monken is revolutionizing the UGA football offense and the changes fit Demetris Robertson’s skillset.

Demetris Robertson has had a college football career full of amazing highs and painful lows. The Savannah native initially signed with California in 2016 as the No. 1 receiver in the nation and lived up to that billing with a 767-yard freshman campaign completed by seven touchdowns.

Then an injury forced him to miss almost the entire 2017 season, and family illness prompted him to consider transferring. He eventually landed much closer to home, committing to the UGA football team. Now a redshirt sophomore, he still showed the effects of his injury and finished his first year in Athens without a catch.

Robertson has persevered through a mountain of adversity. He caught 30 passes in 2019 for 333 yards and he scored three touchdowns. One of those scores was the game-tying touchdown against South Carolina. The numbers are nowhere near what he has the potential to produce, but after two rough seasons, he probably saw last season as a blessing.

All of Robertson’s hard work may finally pay off this season with Todd Monken taking over as offensive coordinator. Monken is a master of the passing game and he has to love taking over an offense with Robertson, not just as a player, but as a senior leader. Even if George Pickens is still the No. 1 receiver, Monken’s offenses historically feature secondary targets with 700-plus receiving yards.

Robertson is a good all-around receiver. He possesses a few running back-esque skills which make him a solid target for screen passes and jet sweeps. Robertson has improved immensely as a route runner so he’s able to make catches all over the field. But he’s at his best when he’s stretching the defenses. Robertson has the speed to beat most corners and he can create a huge mismatch in the slot.

Robertson is in for a huge season in this new offense. Finally, after the injury, family health issues and a year spent in an offense without an identity, Robertson will finally begin to look like a former five-star prospect again.
