Georgia football redshirt-freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis is leaving the program.

D’Wan Mathis, who flipped from Ohio State on National Signing Day back in 2018 after Justin Fields decided to transfer to Ohio State from Georgia, has decided to leave the Georgia football team and will most likely transfer from Georgia as reported by Jake Rowe. Mathis is a 6-6 225 pound quarterback who is a former four-star according to 247’s Composite. The Georgia football staff then discovered a brain cyst and Mathis had to have brain surgery. He missed the entire 2019 season and was hoping to play this season.

Mathis did end up starting the first game of the season against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Mathis completed eight of 17 passing attempts for 55 yards and ran ten times for four yards. He also threw an interception, fumbled a snap, and was sacked twice. Mathis was taken out of that game after just one drive into the second quarter. He did see a few more drives at the end of the game.

He would see more work at quarterback until Stetson Bennett injured his hand in Georgia football’s game against Auburn. Mathis would see just two snaps in that game where he handed the ball off and then ran a quarterback draw. He hasn’t thrown a single pass in Georgia’s offense since the fourth quarter of that first game against Arkansas.

His final game, at Georgia, came against Florida where he completed just four of his 13 passing attempts for 34 yards. He also threw a touchdown and two interceptions.

When Mississippi State came to Georgia to take on the Bulldogs the three quarterbacks on the depth chart were JT Daniels, Stetson Bennett, and Carson Beck. So the writing was on the wall for this move. Mathis wasn’t happy with his role in the offense and his body language gave that away.

So this tweet wasn’t all that surprising:

It is a shame that it didn’t work out for Mathis after everything he has gone through. He deserved a better end to his time in Athens. However, he has made some fans for life here in Bulldawg Nation. Wherever his path takes him we wish him well and hope to see him succeed. Hopefully, he doesn’t decide to take a trip down to Gainesville, Florida. Please, Mathis, don’t turn to The Darkside.
