As quickly as it started, Georgia football’s season is almost at its end.

There is a special time of year, between September and January, where you can step outside and just the mere scent of the air makes think about football. No matter how old we get when you see the leaves on the ground and feel that brisk cool breeze it beckons to you that football season is here. It’s the time of year we all gathered our friends together in the backyard to play a game as we dreamed of being like our favorite Georgia football players.

Unfortunately, that season is coming to an end soon. One that we thought may not even happen in the first place. In the spring campus was cleared of every person, including football players and staff. When spring practice was shut down and G Day with it, things looked grim. Coaches, players, and fans alike had no idea if football would be played at all in 2020.

However, here we are, about to dive into bowl season at the end of a successful college football season that saw all power five conferences not only play but crown a champion. It saw Cinderalla stories come out of the Group of Five such as Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina. Yet, somehow, in the midst of it all, some call Georgia football’s season a failure.

A season that saw zero positive COVID 19 test results. A season in which just one player opted out because of COVID, but not one player opted out due to COVID after the season started, regardless of the outbreaks, other teams were having. This team showed its persistence time and time again, even after it lost to Alabama, and again after losing to Florida.

Georgia football had a down year from what most people would say. They ended the regular season 7-2 and for the first time since Kirby Smart‘s first season, they were not ranked in the top five on the final College Football Playoff rankings. This begs the question, is ending the regular season ranked No. 9 really a down season with such odd circumstances surrounding this season?

Think about it. Smart brought in Todd Monken to completely overhaul his offense. He had his starting quarterback decide to go to the NFL early. He then recruits two transfer quarterbacks to come to play for him. Then, in the midst of all of this, spring practice is shut down and the players have to go home losing precious time between the new quarterbacks, their teammates, and the new offensive coordinator.

If that weren’t bad enough, one of the quarterbacks was hurt and couldn’t contribute right away and the other decided to opt-out just three weeks before the season started. This would have broken most programs. However, Georgia football isn’t just any other program, they have a real leader that wouldn’t let them get down. Instead, he encouraged them to fight on, and fight they did.

They won four SEC games with a former walk-on quarterback who had just transferred back to Georgia after playing a year in Junior College. Stetson Bennett has taken a lot of flack from Georgia football fans, but what he was able to do in his short time as starting quarterback was nothing short of heroic. Georgia owes Bennett for keeping this team’s head above water while JT Daniels was recovering.

Speaking of Daniels, he has become an instant hero and fan favorite. What he has been able to accomplish over these last three games is phenomenal. He has the Georgia faithful in great spirits for next year. Georgia football’s stock may have never been higher than it looks to be in 2021 with Daniels commanding Monken’s offense.

There is still one more game to finish in 2020 though. One more test to pass. One more mountain to conquer. One more team to beat. Then it’s all over for another eight months. The coldest, most empty months of the year. However, that is two weeks off. As of right now, there is still one more game to get up for. One more game to cheer on the Dawgs. One more game to come together as Dawgnation.

Ladies and gentlemen, please stand, it’s time to Attack the Day one last time.
