Georgia football shows resiliency in comeback Peach Bowl victory

Georgia football followed their leader’s example in its Peach Bowl win.

Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart gets a lot of criticism from a portion of the fanbase, whether warranted or not, about how he’s handled his time overlooking the program. However, the last-second win over Cincinnati showed the attitude of his team and that attitude reflects their leader, Coach Smart.

His “Keep Chopping” mantra is well known throughout the fanbase and that is exactly what led them to victory. The team never packed it in. They never gave up. They picked up their axes, dug in, and chopped even harder. They fought for one another until that tree finally fell in victory.

The resiliency of this team is something that gets lost in lofty expectations but is something Smart knew was important from day one. A team has to have a willingness to fight instilled in them if they ever want to win a championship. No team is going to lay down and hand you a trophy.

You have to go out and earn it. This is why Coach Smart believes that complacency is like cancer to a football team. If you ever become satisfied with where you are it’s very difficult to get motivated to go past that point. It is grit and determination that propels teams to championships.

Talent and coaching are just part of winning. The thing that gets lost when concentrating on these two things is perseverance. Having the most talented roster in the nation is just part of the equation. The other part is what happens when that talent faces adversity. What happens when that talent gets hit in the mouth?

How a team answers these questions will determine if they are a championship-caliber team or just a team with a lot of talented individuals on the roster. Individuals will never win a team sport. It will always take the entire team to come together and refusing to quit until the task is done to achieve victory.
