My God, a Senator . . . maybe. Georgia football fans will get to see Herschel Walker run again.

The 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and all-time leading rusher in the Southeastern Conference announced his candidacy for the United States Senate this week.

Georgia football fans are accustomed to seeing Herschel Walker run, but this time he’ll be toting a briefcase instead of a football.

No stranger to competition, Walker will tangle with other candidates to secure the Republican nomination in an attempt to unseat incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock.

This won’t be the first foray into politics for a prominent former college football player or coach.

If Walker were to run and win, he would join the likes of J.C. Watts, Heath Shuler, Tommy Tuberville, Jon Runyan, Tom Osborne, Jack Kemp, Steve Largent, and Gerald Ford in shifting from gridiron greatness to holding political office.

Walker is considered by many to be one of, if not the greatest college football players of all-time.

Know for a devastating combination of brute strength and world-class speed, Walker shredded SEC defenses for three seasons, amassing a staggering 5,259 yards on the ground. He set the career SEC rushing record, which he still holds.

Opposing defensive coordinators were thrilled to see him head to the USFL as a member of the New Jersey Generals following his Heisman-winning junior campaign in 1982.

As of Walker’s announcement, three other Republican candidates have also thrown their hat in to the primary ring – Gary Black, Kelvin King, and Latham Saddler.

The Republican primary is scheduled for May 24,  2022.
