Georgia Football: Week 10 at Tennessee

  • Venue: Neyland Stadium
  • City: Knoxville, Tenn.
  • Overall Record: Georgia leads 25-23-2
  • Last meeting:  Georgia won 44-21

Another rebuilding SEC East team, the Dawgs final conference game of the year, will be against Tennessee on the road in Knoxville.

The Volunteers replaced Jeremey Pruitt after leading them to a 3-7 season in 2020 with Josh Heupel, their fifth head coach since Phillip Fulmer left in 2008.

Tennessee has a 73-75 overall record since 2009 and went 16-19 under Pruitt. A once SEC East powerhouse has turned into the team everyone scratches their head at, wondering what in the world happened.

This game will be the third SEC team that Georgia will go up against that has a head coach in their first year, and it’s six if you count second-year coaches.

Tennessee has a lot of rebuilding to do, and 2021 will have low expectations. The Vols return starters on both sides of the ball, but there is a ton of work left to do.

A lot of players transferred out of the program, including both of their leading rushers. Not to mention they’re dealing with NCAA recruiting violations too.

It’s a hot mess in Knoxville, and 2021 should be another year of struggles. With Jared Guarantano gone, the Vols need to find a starting quarterback. The race will likely be between Harrison Bailey, Hendon Hooker from Virginia Tech, or Joe Milton from Michigan.

Bailey played six games for the Vols last year, completing 70.59% of his passes. As a highly-touted recruit, he could get the nod this season, or it’ll likely be Hooker.

The Virginia Tech transfer started seven of the eight games last season, throwing for 1,339 yards and nine touchdowns. Hooker also ran for nine scores.

So, Georgia will likely see one of these two guys.

Last year, Georgia defeated the Vols 44-21 but gave up 215 yards through the air. The Dawgs defense struggled to get them off the field as well as they converted 2-of-3 fourth downs.

Georgia’s offense scored throughout the game, recording 193 yards on the ground and 238 through the air. This season, the Bulldogs should find success by keeping it balanced, but it could be a great game for Daniels to air it out some and get some style points.

Tennesse’s pass defense ranked 11th last year in the SEC as they gave up 265.8 yards a game. The Vols also had the third-fewest interceptions at five total.

Georgia’s secondary needs to shut down their pass attack, and the defensive front needs to put on the pressure.

The Bulldogs should handle Tennessee, but it’s an SEC opponent, so they should keep the throttle down until the final whistle.

This game could look like Georgia’s 2017 visit to Knoxville, but the defense must do their job.

Score Prediction: 41-7

Projected 2021 Record: 10-0
