“Why can’t we have nice things?” That’s probably been a common refrain from Georgia football fans as they scrolled their Twitter feed today.
It seems JT Daniels may be dealing with a nagging injury in his back that caused him to miss some practice snaps this week.
Georgia fans, still riding the high from the Dawgs epic win over Clemson in the Duke’s Mayo Classic, are loathe to hear that their starting quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate may be on the shelf for any time at all.
Daniels numbers from the win over Clemson weren’t gaudy, but he commanded the offense, protected the football save one ill-advised throw in the third quarter, and distributed the football against a stingy Clemson defense.
Eleven different Bulldogs caught passes against Clemson, showing Daniels propensity as the point guard of the offense, adept at taking what the defense gave Georgia’s offense play-to-play.
Head Coach Kirby Smart, responding to a question from the gathered media at his press conference on Tuesday, affirmed that Carson Beck is currently No. 2 on the depth chart at quarterback.
The good news for Georgia football is that Saturday’s contest against UAB provides an opportunity to rest Daniels if needed.
Georgia is plenty talented up and down the roster to handle the Blazers with ease, even without the services of QB1, if need be.
It also might not be the worst thing in the world for Beck to get some live game action. If JT Daniels injury is more serious than anticipated, or if he were to suffer an injury later in the season, it would be beneficial for Georgia’s backup quarterback to have some game reps under his belt.
Let’s hope this is just a minor issue that can be managed with a few days of rest and rehab and JT Daniels is back under center in no time.
