It’s been 657 days since Sanford Stadium heard the thunder of 93,000 Georgia football fans. That all changes today.
The tents are up, the grills are smoking, the bag chairs are out, the Solo cups are full, and the Classic City is dressed to the nines. That can only mean one thing – it’s Saturday in Athens!
Athens is alive with the sounds and smells of a college football weekend and all is right with the world.
The Dawgs and Blazers kick off at 3:30 Between The Hedges and the Dawg Walk is slated to start at 1:15 pm.
It will be a memorable day for a number of reasons. In addition to it being Georgia football’s home opener and the first full capacity game in almost two calendar years, it is also the 20th anniversary of September 11th.
UAB released a sneak peak of the helmets they would wear for Saturday’s game to commemorate 9/11 and honor the fallen and they are A-plus.
Saturday will be a celebration of the pageantry of college football, but the game itself now holds a level of intrigue that most Georgia fans could’ve done without – uncertainty at the quarterback position.
News released this week that early-season Heisman candidate JT Daniels will be out this week with an oblique injury.
Prior to the release of the injury news, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart indicated Tuesday that Carson Beck was QB2.
Since the news of the injury though, there’s been no definitive proclamation on who will be Georgia’s signal-caller against the Blazers on Saturday afternoon.
What has become clear is that the choice seems to be between Beck and somewhat surprisingly, the starter for the majority of the 2020 season, Stetson Bennett.
Whomever gets the nod, they will have the full weight of Dawgnation behind them, and will spend the day listening to the sweet serenade of a 93,000-member chorus shouting, “GO DAWGS!”
