2: Georgia football defense halts Blazers on third downs

Another area the Dawgs really impressed me was on third down and how the defense shut down the Blazers offense almost entirely.

UAB converted just 1-of-11 third downs as the Georgia defense got them off the field and didn’t allow them to sustain drives.

The Blazers’ longest drive came in the third quarter when they held onto the ball for 6:11. They went 41 yards on 11 plays, but Georgia’s defense stood tough on fourth down as UAB turned the ball over on downs.

UAB converted on one-fourth down on that drive to get the first down and keep it alive. However, they only got one shot because the defense wasn’t about to let it happen again.

The Blazers’ third down conversion came in the first quarter when they rushed for 12 yards on 3rd and 8. However, the Dawgs shut them down after that and made them work hard for every yard they earned.

On the other 10 third downs, Georgia either forced an incomplete pass or stuffed them short of the first down. They even threw in a couple of havoc plays to end drives.

Georgia’s ability to stop teams on third down is how they will stay fresh throughout the game, as long as the offense continues to find success. If the Dawgs can prevent drives from continuing, they are doing their job right.

This special defense is a unique squad of head hunters willing to work as a unit to shut down anyone in their path. While Clemson was a tough test, getting through the SEC will be more challenging than anyone realizes.

While it’s been incredible watching them through the first two games, they must keep this kind of dominance up to show the work they are doing is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the best defense in the country.
