Georgia Football: 3 Sensational stats that defined the Dawgs win
3: Defense havoc numbers impress for 2nd straight week, but this time with interceptions
Lastly, the final stat that stood out in his game was the three interceptions Georgia had. While they are part of the havoc defensive stats we love to talk about each week, I want to focus just on them.
While we’re going to keep it mainly about these interceptions, the Dawgs were pretty consistent in the other havoc categories. Georgia recorded three sacks, six tackles for loss, three interceptions and 13 quarterback hurries to hit on them briefly.
Okay, now back to the havoc stat that I think mattered most — those three interceptions.
The Dawgs recorded a pick-six for the second straight game. That pick-six marked the sixth one in the Kirby Smart era. In games where Georgia scores a non-offensive touchdown, the Bulldogs are 17-1.
Freshman Jamon Dumas-Johnson snagged this one during the fourth quarter from 20 yards out and pretty much made it into the endzone before ever getting touched.
Lewis Cine and Kelee Ringo also recorded interceptions against the Blazers. Both of those could have resulted in big plays for UAB, and instead, their instincts helped them pick off the ball, which gave Georgia the ball back to attempt at scoring again.
Plays like interceptions and pick-sixes are so crucial because they give Georgia a momentum boost. They also knock the air out of the opposing team, making it harder to make big plays.
While these types of havoc plays are not always this common, the fact that the secondary is gaining this kind of confidence early on is a big step in the right direction for Georgia.
As a defense that strives so much on stopping the run, the last two weeks have shown that Georgia can be strong on the back end as well, even if they lost all of the starters.
The more confidence they gain, the more big plays they will make. Georgia must be strong front to back on the defensive side of the ball to win it all, and so far, the Dawgs are making it happen.
