Three Underrated Georgia football games against Auburn this century
2011: No. 15 Georgia 45, No. 20 Auburn 7
The 2010 season will be remembered by Auburn fans forever. Led by Heisman trophy winner and future No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Cam Newton, the Tigers ran through college football en route to a 14-0 season and BCS National Championship victory against Oregon.
The next season saw a drop off for the Tigers, with Newton and others from that 2010 squad in the NFL or graduated. The Dawgs took advantage on this day in Athens.
Georgia started the year 0-2 with losses coming to Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game and at home to South Carolina. The Bulldogs would rally to win seven straight games coming into the Auburn game.
Georgia exploded on offense throughout this game, racking up 528 yards. Quarterback Aaron Murray was the hero in this one, as he went 14-for-18 with 224 yards and four touchdowns on the day, while also surpassing Matthew Stafford’s record for most passing touchdowns in a season by a UGA QB.
Running back Isaiah Crowell, the eventual 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year, had 132 rushing yards and a touchdown on the day. Teammate Carlton Thomas also had over 100 yards on the day, netting 127 while also averaging 8.5 yards per carry.
With this massive victory over Auburn, Georgia put themselves in position to clinch the SEC East division outright for the first time since 2005, which they would officially do the next week by beating Kentucky.
Georgia would finish that season 10-4 and, unfortunately, lost big to LSU in the SEC Championship game. They went on to play current Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins and the Michigan State Spartans in the Outback Bowl, but came up short 33-30 in third overtime.
