The second CFP rankings were released Tuesday night, and to no one’s surprise, Georgia football remains the No.1 team in the country.
However, after ranking the Dawgs correctly, the committee got it all wrong.
Georgia was the only team to impress last week as the Dawgs beat Missouri by five touchdowns to move to 9-0 overall on the year.
The Dawgs have held all nine opponents to fewer than 14 points, and their offense is getting it done.
Georgia football remains on top, but the committee needs to reevaluate the rest of the CFP Rankings.
There is an enormous gap between the Dawgs and the rest of the top four teams. Even though head coach Kirby Smart says there isn’t after watching Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon’s games last week, it seems pretty obvious.
Smart is trying to keep his team humble, so it’s understandable why he says the things he does. Humility is a week away, but if the Dawgs keep up what they’re doing, the committee won’t have to debate that top ranking.
There isn’t a team out there right now that seems strong enough to stop the Dawgs completely. Ohio State, Alabama, and Oregon might score more than 14 points on Georgia if they played. Still, the Dawgs would eventually edge them out because that defense is better than any of the ones those three teams have taken on.
The committee showed a ton of favoritism to the Tide by ranking them No.2 after barely beating LSU last week. Alabama is not the No.2 team in the country, but because they’ve been there year after year, they get the benefit of the doubt.
LSU exposed them even more last Saturday, and if the Bayou Bengals had fewer injuries, who knows how that game would have gone. Alabama isn’t nearly as strong as they have been in the past, and now the college football world should know that.
After trying to give the Bearcats credit last week and struggling against Tulsa, they haven’t done enough to be in the Top 4. If they were to beat Tulsa handily, then this would be a different conversation, but they didn’t, so, no, they shouldn’t be in the playoffs.
The playoff committee should have put Oregon at No.2 because they beat Ohio State earlier in the season, and even though they fell to Stanford, it doesn’t matter. Ohio State at No.3 is an acceptable ranking for now, but the Buckeyes have to put down the hammer and handle their business if they want to remain there.
Alabama should be No.4 since Michigan State lost to Purdue, Cincinnati should be No. 6, and Michigan should be No.5.
The top four look like this: No.1 Georgia, No.2 Alabama, No.3 Oregon, and No. 4 Ohio State after Week 10 of the college football season.
Georgia football just needs to continue to focus and beat teams with a purpose. If they do that, they should finish the regular season perfectly and likely come away with Smart’s second SEC title and potentially his first national title. Right now, no one impresses us enough to say they would challenge the Dawgs, and it’ll take a lot to change that opinion.
