Georgia football: These 3 simple stats prove why the Dawgs fell to Alabama
Georgia football couldn’t convert or stop on third down
One of the biggest glaring stats is the third-down numbers for Georgia football on both sides of the ball.
While usually, the Dawgs are successful on first and second down, the third-down numbers didn’t need to be better, but this game was a different story. With two talented defenses, the team who converted more was going to be the winner, and Alabama did that.
Alabama converted 7-of-14 third-downs while Georgia converted 3-of-12. The Tide sustained drives four more times than the Dawgs, which speaks numbers.
Both teams went 1-of-3 in the first quarter, but then the atrocious second quarter happened for the Dawgs.
Georgia went 0-of-2 while Alabama went 4-of-5. This quarter is what hurt the Dawgs the most on third down.
Alabama scored its first touchdown on 3rd-and-2, with the 67-yard strike that flipped the switch. Their second conversion was a 22-yard pass to convert another 3rd-and-2. The third was a three-yard run, and the final conversion was a 23-yard pass on 3rd-and-10.
Georgia did better in the third quarter, converting 2-of-4 while holding Alabama to 1-of-2. However, the fourth quarter showed another 0-of-3 conversion rate for the Dawgs and Alabama converted once on a 24-yard pass on 3rd-and-5.
The Tide found ways to make third down count while the Dawgs continued to fall short. When you only convert three third-downs against a team like Alabama, they rarely win the game.
