Georgia football waited all day long and suffered through a couple of 5-stars choosing other schools, but the wait was worth it as the Dawgs landed 5-star edge rusher Marvin Jones Jr.

Jones trended toward Alabama for a while, but the last 48 hours saw him picking the good guys who wear the right shade of red like so many other guys.

After missing out on 5-star safety Kamari Wilson, it was eerily quiet on all the message boards and Twitter. Then 40-minutes later, the Dawgs got the best news of the day and a massive surprise.

Another early enrollee for the Dawgs, Jones, will be a kid who tries to get on the field as a freshman and can do so.

Georgia football misses one 5-star but pulls evil genius move by landing another 40 minutes later.

According to 247Sports Composite rankings, Jones is the No. 22 overall player, the No.2 Edge rusher and the No. 4 player in Florida.

Once again, head coach Kirby Smart took the narrative away from Florida by stealing another Sunshine State prospect. In this class alone, the Dawgs have taken seven from the State of Florida, including three of Georgia’s 5-star signees.

That Dec. 10 visit proved to be beneficial and enough to make this 5-star commit to the Dawgs. While missing out on Wilson wasn’t detrimental to the class, adding Jones to this group makes the 2022 group that much more elite.

The Dawgs need some more edge rushers especially ones that are 6-5 and 245-pounds because he is quick but big enough to take down a stout running back.

Leave it up to Smart to ensure he does exactly what the Dawgs needed to do to get a guy like Jones. This kid is a freak of nature, and he is the kind of guy who would pick Alabama in years’ past, not anymore — Georgia is plucking who they want and letting the rest of the SEC fight for everyone else.

Jones added on 30-pounds of extra weight according to his 247Sports scouting report between his junior and senior season. He has a long reach that is great for being an edge rusher.

If the Jones name sounds familiar it’s because his dad was an All-American linebacker at Florida State and went in the first round of the 1993 NFL Draft to the New York Jets. To beat out his dad’s alma mater and Alabama is a huge win for the Dawgs.

Marvin Jones Jr., was a toss-up for the Dawgs, and as the day went on and players went elsewhere, something felt right about him picking Georgia, and thankfully he did.

The Dawgs now sit at 27 commitments and have the No.3 overall class on 247Sports with 314.62 points. Alabama sits at No.1 and the Aggies are at No.2 right now, but Georgia isn’t finished yet.

They have a few guys left that could sign with the Dawgs including 4-star offensive tackle Earnest Greene, 4-star Christen Miller and possibly 4-star Shemar James. Five-star Shemar Stewart has yet to announce either.  Smoke Bouie is also in the mix.

The Dawgs may be done for the day unless  James comes at six, but Stewart, Greene and Miller are announcing in January and at the All-American bowls.

While the Dawgs may finish at No.2 today, by the end of the February signing period, they could be No.1. Don’t count out the transfer portal either because Georgia has their eyes on a few big-name guys that can help the ranking out as well.
