When a highly touted quarterback name hits the portal, such as Caleb Williams, every program in the nation, including Georgia football, should be trying to grab this star-studded signal-caller from Oklahoma.
In the 24 hours since Williams entered his name into the transfer portal, many suggested that he could be a name that Georgia would want to grab. The Dawgs did recruit him out of high school before flipping Brock Vandagriff from Oklahoma.
Williams was a highly-touted 5-star quarterback in the 2021 class out of high school. He was putting up absurd stats in his senior year of high school, but that’s not all that impressed recruiters.
Caleb Williams could provide proven experience to Georgia football and their quarterback room.
His ability to heave the ball downfield with tremendous accuracy sets him apart from some of the more talented quarterbacks in the entire nation. Williams, when pressured, always seems like he can escape from the pocket and turn a sack into maybe a 15-to-30-yard gain.
That vision and his sheer athletic ability are just two things coaches drool over when it comes to Williams.
Early in Williams’ high school days, people thought he would end up playing for Georgia.
However, once the Dawgs heard about Vandagriff decommitting from Oklahoma, head coach Kirby Smart and his staff were the first ones to jump on it. Vandagriff would later commit to Georgia, which opened up the opportunity for Williams to pick the Sooners.
If Williams somehow transferred to Georgia, where would he fit in exactly?
After finally gaining back some major quarterback depth after the departure of Jacob Eason and Justin Fields, the Dawgs have plenty of great options, but adding Williams will put them over the top.
Williams provides his unmatched talent and his experience over some of the quarterbacks that the Dawgs have in place as of right now, such as Vandagriff and Carson Beck. Not to mention Gunner Stockton coming in for the 2022 recruiting class.
He not only provides the long ball, such as JT Daniels can do, but he provides the quickness and acceleration to scramble out of the pocket when pressured, similar to what Stetson Bennett can do.
Once all is said and done, and if Williams does pick Athens to be his next destination, teams from all over college football will be put on notice because the Dawgs will most certainly have the best quarterback room in the country even if some decide to transfer.
Sure it could cause some guys to leave Georgia, but the Dawgs want to continue contending for national championships each year, and Williams has already shown he is a playmaker.
While Georgia does have a crowded room, that proven experience will give the others a little more time to develop and keep the Dawgs in the hunt. These rumors with Williams are still just that, but it wouldn’t be a negative thing if he did end up in Athens.
