Something that can be extremely confusing is whether Georgia football won the 2021 national championship or is it 2022? As we all get ready to celebrate the Dawgs this beautiful Saturday, it’s time to put this topic to bed.

Georgia won the 2021 national championship, even if the Dawgs had 2022 on their chest, and I’ve used both, but 2021 is the correct answer after looking into it.

Remember Georgia football fans — the Dawgs are 2021 national champs, not 2022.

The College Football Playoffs put the year the game gets played in on the jerseys, but the championship denotation is for the year of the regular season. So even though everything had 2022 on it, that isn’t the case.

This marketing tactic seems weird, and it obviously confuses many people because why call it the 2022 CFP game if it’s for the 2021 season? That decision doesn’t seem logical because who cares if it’s played in 2022, the teams are only playing in the new year because that is how they scheduled bowl games.

Seeing giant 2022 logos all over Indianapolis had to be confusing to the Dawg fans that went, and it’s sparked conversation on Twitter. At first glance, one could assume it’s 2022 champions because of the giant 2022’s all over the place, but nope.

Maybe the playoffs should stick to whatever regular season it is because that would save us from a lot of head-scratching and trying to figure out what year champions they are. However, it is likely too late to change that because even more people would get confused.

While it’s understandable why the playoff people decided to do it the way they did — it may be beneficial to look into changing it when this contract is up, and the whole expansion discussion gets settled. Maybe they need to add this to the agenda because it sure would help a lot of fans who want to brag on their team understand better.

So unless you all are predicting the Dawgs win back-to-back titles, Georgia won the 2021 national championship, and that is what we all will be celebrating in Athens today. Those who are going bundle up because it’s going to be cold, and to the fans not going, here is a link to where you can watch the festivities.
