Georgia football got great news Sunday evening when defensive back Tykee Smith announced he would return for another year in Athens.

He took to Twitter and talked about running it back, just like head coach Kirby Smart did during the championship celebrations on Saturday.

Smith gives Georgia another experienced defensive back in what will eventually be one of the youngest rooms on the team. The Dawgs needed both Christopher Smith and Tykee Smith to return so they could help lead the youngsters.

Georgia football received massive news as the Smith defensive back duo will play in Athens next season.

Smith came from West Virginia last season, but injuries prevented him from getting much action.

One of the weakest areas is the secondary, so with the Dawgs adding two veterans back into the equation, it helps the depth issue out while also having experienced leaders back there.

After seven players left Georgia from the secondary, the depth quickly became an issue. The Dawgs overcame some of those issues this season, but even with the talent 2022 recruiting class coming to town, they need as many to stay so it doesn’t get in rough shape again.

Jalen Kimber, Ameer Speed, Latavious Brini, and Lovasea Carroll are all in the transfer portal and played in the secondary, so Smith returning is extremely important to the overall unity mindset. The Smith duo can teach these youngsters sometimes it’s okay to wait for playing time as they develop into better players.

Tykee Smith may have stayed hurt most of the year, but it seems he made the wise decision to come back because now he can increase his draft stock, help Georgia try and make a repeat, and be the leader the Dawgs needed him to be in 2021.

One guy left with the last name Smith needs to make his decision, and if he does, Georgia’s defense won’t skip much of a beat in 2022, and that is Nolan Smith. The defensive back duo decided, so now it’s up to him. January 17th is the deadline to declare for the draft, so Georgia will know sooner than later if he wants to continue his legacy in the Red and Black.
