Georgia football: 21 years of Super Bowls and this one matters most

There has been at least one Georgia football player in the last 21 Super Bowls, which ties with LSU for the longest streak.

LSU and Georgia have starting quarterbacks in this game, and it feels like the 2019 SEC Championship all over again. That is a rather extreme comparison, but still, with Joe Burrow at the helm of the Bengals offense, why not.

However, this year’s Super Bowl weighs a little more for the Dawgs as it’s finally Matthew Stafford’s opportunity to win one. He would be the first former Georgia quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl.

He has been in the league for over a decade, and now that he is with the Rams, Stafford has an actual shot to prove how good he is. Georgia fans know how good he is and what that arm is capable of, but after years in Detriot, it’s past time for him to have some success.

What would make the first two months of 2022 better than to see Georgia win a national championship and then see a former Dawg win his first Super Bowl?

Georgia football has nothing to lose in this Super Bowl, but if Matthew Stafford wins — it does wonders.

There are three players and a coach on the Rams with Georgia ties in Stafford, Sony Michel, Leonard Floyd and running backs coach Thomas Brown. On the Bengels, Trey Hill is a starter, and there are a few Dawgs on the practice squad.

No matter who wins, the Dawgs will add another Super Bowl winner to the list, but something about Stafford winning his first weighs so heavy on this Sunday. He didn’t win a national championship in college or an SEC Championship, even though he was one of the best quarterbacks to wear the Red and Black.

He didn’t win a Heisman Trophy or anything like that. Stafford worked his tail off and went to the league as the No.1 overall draft pick.

Burrow did win a national title, an SEC Championship, the Heisman Trophy, and then went No.1 overall. It isn’t a comparison, but he is also in his second year, while Stafford is in his 13th, so Burrow could afford to lose this one. Losing this Super Bowl would humble him a bit and make him realize losses happen.

He knows that after leaving Ohio State and his journey isn’t all rainbow and sunshine either, but Stafford deserves this win. We won’t be disappointed if Burrow wins because he is another young quarterback showing that the league is in good hands, but we would feel for Stafford.

Stafford is doing this for himself, but also Dawg Nation. Some Dawg fans have gone with Bengals, and that is okay, but some loved this guy at Georgia and have watched him deal with Detriot for years, so it’s time for the football gods to return the favor after the years of torture.
