Georgia Basketball: Tom Crean could be out sooner than later

Rumors surrounding Georgia basketball head coach Tom Crean surfaced Friday night, and while his seat is already hot from the terrible season, he could get fired for something else.

Dawg Sports reports from UGASports there are rumors surrounding firing him for cause after failing to report a physical altercation between two of his assistant coaches.

Georgia is 6-20 on the season and 1-2 in SEC play in year four of the Crean era. Crean’s seat, at least to the fans, continues to get hotter and hotter throughout the season.

With this surfacing, it wouldn’t be surprising if university officials terminated him sooner than later.

If the university waits until the end of the season, there could be a buy-out, but if they fire him for just cause, that buy-out will go away, and they wouldn’t have to pay it to him.

The AJC reported that assistant coach Wade Mason and director of player personnel Brian Fish got into an altercation at halftime of the LSU game in Baton Rouge. That altercation led to Mason being indefinitely suspended.

It seems Mason overheard Fish make an inappropriate comment about a player, and the coach addressed it right away and then at halftime. That second time is when the altercation happened. Fish is a repeat offender as there is camera footage of him and Christian Wright during the second half of the home game against Auburn that was suspicious.

If Crean gets axed for this, it could be a blessing in disguise for the Dawgs because not having to pay him his buy-out would be the best possible scenario. That $3.6 million is a hefty price tag to get rid of him with just a couple of years left in his contract.

However it seems like things have evolved since last night and on Saturday morning, the Athletic Association released a statement on the situation.

However,  Georgia basketball desperately needs a new head coach to refresh this program and get it relevant again. This altercation isn’t a great look, but it does open a door that could benefit this program in the long run.

Georgia men’s basketball isn’t in a great place right now, and it is past time to turn this program into a contender. We will continue to monitor the situation as it develops.
