Georgia basketball could see domino effect after Wade Mason departure
Georgia basketball has a lot going on right now, at least the men’s team does. The AJC and other publications reported that assistant coach Wade Mason and Georgia had departed ways late Monday night.
That departure could be the first domino to fall, with the rest coming soon behind him. Head coach Tom Crean’s seat has been hot a while and gets hotter the further we go in the season.
The Dawgs have had it rough all season as they are currently 6-21 overall and 1-13 in SEC play. That record isn’t up to the Dawg standard, and everyone knows it at this point in the season. There are four games left to play in the regular season, and from the looks, Georgia could go 0-4 in them.
With Mason getting fired, could a house cleaning be on the way as soon as the season concludes?
Georgia basketball could see a domino effect with its men’s coaches.
Mason and director of personnel Brian Fish allegedly got into an altercation during Georgia’s game against LSU last week. This incident caused Mason to get suspended indefinitely, and the rumors got louder. It didn’t help that Crean didn’t report this incident to HR and someone else did, but we’ve already discussed that.
The AJC reported the incident the night before the Ole Miss game, and then the Dawgs got beat. After another loss, 247Sports caught Crean talking about things after the Zoom interview session ended, and they were pretty interesting.
It’s clear that Crean has a lot of frustrations as well, so why can he not get this group to rally together and play for each other? Has this team given up on him? Maybe, but no one can be certain.
However, this season and the last few days of news should be enough to think that Mason is just the first of many who will likely lose their jobs. In our opinion, the departure, Zoom nonsense, and other things circling this program feel suspicious.
Money could be a significant factor here in why they don’t fire Crean already, but at this point, to salvage the men’s basketball program, the university must make a change.
This domino effect that could take place could be a massive blessing in disguise because it could be a significant enough change to avoid any more turnover from the players.
Maybe it’ll help keep some current players like Kario Oquendo staying with the Dawgs. Georgia lost so many to the transfer portal, which is a big reason they are struggling, but still, a good head coach would be able to get a lot of this group of players.
They aren’t scrubs but talented kids who have what it takes to be good. The disconnect at this point is just far too much.
We all know that when one domino falls, the rest follow, and that could be the case with this men’s basketball program. At this point, we welcome that domino effect because it’s needed desperately.
