Georgia baseball sees early season challenge to test their grit
Georgia baseball is off to a hot start this season as they remain undefeated, heading into an early-season challenge that’ll test this team.
After sweeping Arkon over the weekend, Georgia now has a 7-0 start to the season, matching their best start under head coach Scott Stricklin.
This team has something about them that continues to stand out, but it’s still too early to pinpoint what that might be. The Dawgs have got the grit and determination that you see in those great teams, but it is still early in the season.
Georgia baseball will get an early-season challenge to push this team to the next level.
The Dawgs play four games this week as they take on Wofford today at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., then they will take on in-state rivals Georgia Tech in a three-game series. Game 1 will be at the Yellow Jackets’ stadium, then Game 2 will be in Athens, and the final meeting will be at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville on Sunday.
To play four games in one week is already difficult in itself, but to play at four different fields can be even a bigger test. Each place brings various grass, layout, and overall feel, so it’ll be difficult. Plus, traveling to Greenville, S.C., then to Atlanta, back home, and then to Lawrenceville can be taxing.
However, this test will be good for the Dawgs as it’ll measure just how much grit and determination they possess. If they are on track for a great year, this multi-location week should be a breeze.
That mid-week game with Wofford won’t be easy. Even if the Dawgs beat them last week 7-1, the Terriers won’t go down without a fight. Georgia has never lost to Wofford, but that doesn’t mean they should take this game lightly. The Dawgs need to come out aggressive and swinging for the fences.
Get this game out of the way and focus on destroying the Yellow Jackets. The Dawgs are batting .304, have hit nine home runs in seven games and have a .985 fielding percentage.
That pitching staff, though, ranks eighth nationally with a 1.60 ERA. Georgia has 68 strikeouts and 18 walks on the season, so the Dawgs are hot in both areas.
Those are great stats, and the Dawgs need to maintain that. It is a long season, but traveling without losing yourself is a huge advantage.
This week’s key is to hold on and ride because the Dawgs have the talent to beat both opponents. However, the other thing they need to remember is to play as one unit and stick to their game. It’s worked through the first seven games, and there is no reason it shouldn’t work for the next four.
