Georgia football signed another top-ranked quarterback in the 2022 class. While some didn’t think the Dawgs needed the likes of Gunner Stockton, he brings a competitive edge that will keep starting quarterback Stetson Bennett and the others on their toes.
The Dawgs poached another great quarterback out of Georgia after snagging Brock Vandagriff the previous recruiting cycle. Georgia needs to continue doing this to keep the depth at that position.
Stockton was one of 18 early enrollees and, after he signed, began practicing with the team for bowl practice.
Georgia football quarterback signee Gunner Stockton brings more competition to the position room.
According to 247Sports Composite rankings, Stockon, a 4-star, ranked as the No. 124 overall, No. 7 quarterback, and the No. 12 player out of Georgia. He should have been a 5-star, but that doesn’t matter now, and it’s a shame he wasn’t given more credit.
He rewrote the Georgia High School Football Record books as Stockton finished his career with 13,652 passing yards, 177 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, 4,372 rushing yards, and 77 rushing scores.
Stockton completed 68% of his passes and averaged 7.2 yards a touch.
He broke Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence’s records. Stockton was unstoppable in high school and while he originally committed to South Carolina, he ended up with the good guys.
Stockton can do it all. He has a great vision in the pocket, on the run and is just a natural playmaker. If Rabun County needed a big play, Stockton got it done for them, through the air and on the ground.
Those versatile skills are what college coaches want in their quarterbacks now, and Stockton could have likely gone wherever, but he loved Georgia.
He put up the stat numbers, and some of them are just flat-out crazy, but that ability to make plays and compete is what will be interesting to watch. Stockton will challenge those in front of him to be better because he will swoop in and beat them if they let off.
Bennett is a competitor too, so it’ll be fun to see how this group evolves throughout the spring, but Stockton isn’t afraid of competition. Another reason Georgia got a gem in him is because there isn’t a selfish bone in his body. Neither he nor Vandagriff is selfish, and they both know when their time comes to take advantage of it.
Stockton has tremendous talent and will be a great addition to the quarterback room for Georgia. He has what coaches want in a signal-caller these days, and he will make your veteran work harder — sounds like a match made in heaven.
