Georgia baseball looks to avoid upset in midweek road test
After such a huge series win over the defending national champions, Georgia baseball cannot let off the throttle. Now the Dawgs will travel to Coolray Field, home of the Gwinnett Stripers, to take on Georgia State.
Georgia is now 16-4 on the season after taking down Mississippi State 2-1 this past weekend in a gauntlet series.
While Game 3 wasn’t good at all for the Dawgs, Georgia got the series victory, which we like seeing.
Georgia State comes into this game 14-6, and the two teams opted to play at the home of the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers stadium.
The Dawgs already have one win under their belt in this stadium this year after beating Georgia Tech 12-3.
Georgia baseball needs to focus on avoiding a midweek upset against Georgia State.
While Georgia snapped their win streak, the Panthers come into this game on a five-game win streak after knocking off No. 15 in Clemson last weekend.
The Dawgs do lead the series over the Panthers 44-8 and have a six-game win streak over them.
For Georgia to make it seven in a row against the Panthers, they will need to have a great day on the mound and see their bats stay red hot.
On the mound for the Dawgs will be freshman Coleman Willis who currently has a 2.45 ERA and a 1-0 record.
Georgia needs a strong showing out of Willis since the Dawgs had to dip into the bullpen this past weekend. If Willis can pitch four-plus innings, it will greatly benefit the Dawgs.
Willis is a great Tuesday game choice because he should be able to do a good job against the Panthers batters.
However, Georgia State pitcher Mason Patel will have his hands full with this Dawgs’ batting lineup.
As a whole, the Dawgs bat .297 and have hit 22 home runs on the year. Ben Anderson is batting .344 and has reached base in 18 straight matchups. He isn’t the only one to do that, as Corey Collins, who currently bats .359, has also reached base in that many games.
Those two don’t even lead the team in batting average. Instead, Cole Tate leads the Dawgs with a .368 batting average. His twin Connor is heating up, too, as he currently bats .315 on the season but had a .462 average, including two doubles, two home runs, and six RBI last week.
This lineup is full of guys who can get hot and just score runs left and right. The Dawgs have found an excellent batting order who compliment each other and right now are one of the reasons Georgia has had so much success.
When this group of guys is on, the Dawgs are hard to beat, which needs to happen on Tuesday. Georgia needs to redeem themselves from that Game 3 embarrassment and deliver the same blow to Georgia State.
This game is when we need to see the Dawgs take control and enforce their will on an opponent. Tuesday night’s game is when the Dawgs prove that beating Mississippi State wasn’t just a good weekend.
The first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m., and fans can listen to it on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network. Georgia has what it takes to beat Georgia State, and now it’s time for them to do it in a big way.
