Georgia football has seen its fair share of multi-sport athletes, and the latest to make headlines is Randon Jernigan, an outfielder for the Dawgs baseball team. He played football and baseball at Glynn Academy in Coastal Georgia but ultimately chose a baseball career.

However, UGASports Editor Anthony Dasher reported that Jernigan is giving football a try and began working out with the Dawgs last week.

He will continue to be a part of the baseball team as an outfielder, but the Dawgs wouldn’t mind a speedy guy like him at receiver.

Georgia football will see baseball player Randon Jernigan try out for the team.

As someone who lives in Brunswick and covered the local high school teams a couple of seasons, Jernigan is a name I quickly realized it was important to know.

He played at Glynn Academy before my time in the Golden Isles, but coaches told me stories of him and how huge he was for the Red Terrors during his time there.

Jernigan helped the Red Terrors make it to the state title game, where they fell short, but he was a major puzzle piece.

Remember Deejay Dallas — Jernigan played on the same high school team as him, and they were such a dynamic duo. Those two together were incredible.

During his senior year, he completed 27-of-47 passes for 650 yards and a touchdown. The Red Terrors are a predominately triple-option team, so Jernigan used his wheels more than his arm. He recorded 137 rushes for 793 yards and 12 scores, so the guy knows how to be someone to make plays.

At 6-foot and 183-pounds, he isn’t the biggest guy, but Jernigan isn’t the smallest either. He has excellent hands, and while he could probably use some fine-tuning on his route running and other receiver stuff, Jernigan is someone who naturally makes plays.

It’s exciting to see him give football another try because of that playmaking ability. He is physically gifted, and while the Dawgs have a speedy slot guy in Ladd McConkey, Jernigan could give Georgia another one.

Not to mention he is a great teammate and has a tremendous work ethic. With the Diamond Dawgs, Jernigan is one of their best defenders, and while he isn’t always in the batting lineup, the limited time he is, Jernigan is batting .500 in four at-bats. He scored six runs and two RBI.

Atheltic is probably the best way to describe him, and if given a chance, he will prove himself worthy of a spot on this team. Now he won’t be on scholarship or anything like that, but Jernigan can walk on and really help the Dawgs with some depth.

Georgia football should at least give Jernigan a solid shot, and it seems like with him already working out with the team, he will get that. Only time will tell, and it could lead to nothing, but for now, fans should be excited because Jernigan is a stud that could shock some people.
