Former Georgia football QB JT Daniels finds his new team
Georgia football didn’t have quarterback JT Daniels on its team long as injuries sidelined him, eventually costing him the starting job. Still, after entering the transfer portal, Daniels finally committed to West Virginia on Wednesday.
The former starter had to finish the semester and transfer as a graduate student to avoid sitting out another season, so Daniels took his time finding another school.
Daniels went 7-0 as a starter at Georgia, but those injuries kept him off the field too long, and Stetson Bennett took over the team. It wasn’t Daniels’ fault, but more bad luck, and while most quarterbacks would quit on a team midseason if that happened, Daniels stuck around, provided Bennett support, and was a total team player.
Former Georgia football quarterback JT Daniels will head to West Virginia.
ESPN reported that Daniels called the Mountaineers’ head coach Neal Brown to deliver the news Wednesday morning. He was in Athens for the 2020 and 2021 seasons after transferring from Southern Cal, where he played in 2018 and 2019.
At Georgia, Daniels started seven games and played in 10 total. During that timespan, he went 148-of-213 for 1,953 yards, 17 touchdowns, five interceptions, and had a 69% completion rate.
He averaged 9.2 yards per pass and showed that Daniels was a playmaker even though he didn’t get a ton of time on the field. We don’t know if he stayed healthy that Georgia would have won the national championship, so it stinks to see someone talented like him get the short end of the stick.
While his college career isn’t what people thought it would be, Daniels is still fighting to prove himself. Daniels and West Virginia are a great fit, and the way Brown runs his team will be great for the quarterback.
Missouri and Oregon State were Daniels’ other two options after visiting all three in the last few weeks. West Virginia made the most sense when they popped up on places he was looking at, so he should finally have a school that would allow him to shine.
Not to mention, Graham Harrell is the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Mountaineers. He was the offensive coordinator at USC while Daniels was there in 2019, so this played a big role in his final decision.
In his ESPN interview, it was clear Georgia left a mark on the quarterback, but he knew Morgantown and West Virginia was the right spot for him. The Mountaineers run an air raid system with Harrell, and that is something Daniels knows all too well. He is a great quarterback in the pocket, where he thrives.
"“I loved it,” Daniels said in a phone interview with ESPN’s Pete Thamel. “It feels very Athens-ish, which is a quintessential college town [and] which I have really, really enjoyed living in.”"
Daniels embraced Athens, and the Dawg faithful did the same with him. He may not have fulfilled what he set out to do at Georgia, but hopefully, he is on the right path now. Injuries pilled up for him, and this article likely wouldn’t exist if those didn’t happen.
However, things happen for a reason, and now Daniels will go to a school with an offense built for him. There are plenty of targets for Daniels to connect and throw to while in Morgantown.
The Big 12 had a lethal addition that could give West Virginia an edge in the 2022 season. He will have to battle it out with some others, but Daniels has the talent and football knowledge that he should win the starting job.
Daniels graduates this May from Georgia, and then he will head to Morgantown. He will forever be a member of this 2021 national championship squad and someone that is always welcomed in Athens.
