Georgia football defensive struggles may happen, but it isn’t doomsday

Georgia football had a historic defense in 2021, and fans must remind themselves that this year isn’t the same. Players have moved onto the NFL, and some chose to stay — regardless, the 2022 squad will have its own identity.

Spring practice is about getting positions featuring the right players. It’s about competing for starting roles and working through some growing pains. So if some struggles occur on Saturday, it isn’t the end of the world, and that doesn’t mean Georgia will fail.

This defense will feature a lot of new faces but also similar ones too who now will have a more prominent role. The secondary is young and will get tested with those explosive plays we mentioned on the last slide. Head coach Kirby Smart will want to challenge that group because it could be a weakness if they don’t figure out the right personnel.

The linebackers could see some hiccups, and finding a counterpart to Jalen Carter won’t happen overnight.

The point here is to take a deep breath and expect the roughness because it’s springtime. A lot of work will get put into place this summer and into fall camp to clean up those loose ends, so right now, just enjoy the ride. Georgia will have another talented defense in 2022, but right now, they’ve got to find their identity, bond as a team and put in the work.

Saturday should be taken with a grain of salt because no spring game features the perfect team. There is talent oozing out of the locker room, but it takes more than raw talent to be elite, and Georgia knows that. It won’t just be the defense, either.

If it doesn’t, something isn’t right because success comes with hard work, sacrifices, and a whole lot of time on the field. We’re early into the 2022 year, so there is plenty of time to work and improve between now and Week 1 against Oregon.

Saturday will entertain the fans by giving them a glimpse of the 2022 Georgia football team. There will be big plays, new faces to learn about, and 93,000 of our closest friends. G-Day as national champions will be great, but the target on their backs is large and shouldn’t get taken lightly.
