Georgia football will shatter its NFL Draft records in 2022

Georgia football broke its NFL Draft record last year with nine players selected, but in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Dawgs will shatter that number.

There are 15 Georgia players who could hear their names called during the 2022 NFL Draft.

The draft starts April 28-30 in Las Vegas, and the anticipation surrounding it is high, especially with a defensive edge rusher potentially going first overall. However, the buzz surrounding Georgia’s players is still going strong almost a month after the NFL Combine.

The Dawgs aren’t just looking to break their records but also to help the conference out. Before we discuss Georgia records, the Dawgs could also help continue the SEC streak for the most players taken in one conference.

If they have 14 selected, it’s a great start because the conference has had the most taken of any conference every year since 2007, and that streak isn’t ending in 2022.

While it’s usually Alabama taking the spotlight in terms of most drafted, the Dawgs could take that from the Tide in 2022 as well. Alabama will have a lot of guys drafted, but finally, Georgia should have more.

Jacksonville has the first pick, and hopefully, they won’t get it wrong. Travon Walker will become the first Dawg since Matthew Stafford and fifth ever in program history to go No.1 overall if the Jags can get it right.

That scenario would make history for the school, and it would be a tremendous start for Georgia. There are a few ways the Dawgs will shatter that NFL Draft number, but seeing him go No.1 would make it even sweeter.

Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, and Devonte Wyatt could all go in the first 32 picks, potentially giving the Dawgs four gone in round one. However, there could be up to six go in the first round, depending on how teams pick. If the Dawgs got six, it would tie an NFL Draft record, not just a school one.

The most Georgia has seen go in the first round was three in 2019, so the Dawgs could break that record. Head coach Kirby Smart has had at least one first-round draft pick in five of six years, with 2017 being the only year that didn’t see one.

Georgia could see at least 10 of the 14 guys selected in the first three rounds. The Dawgs saw all nine of its NFL Draft picks in 2021 go in the first three rounds, which is the most in school history. Georgia saw eight go in 2013 and 2002.

The Dawgs had five go in the first three rounds of 2018, 2009, 2005, 2003, and 2001 NFL Drafts.

Since Smart took over the program, Georgia’s development has tremendously improved, and this 2022 class could set the tone for expectations.

There is a strong chance that Georgia could see all 15 players selected in this draft class, which would also break a record. LSU saw 14 drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, which tied the record. So at least Georgia could tie this record.

These record-breaking circumstances are also massive recruiting tools for the Dawgs to use instead of solely depending on NIL situations. Georgia’s brand sells itself, and with them winning a national championship, that holds weight too.

Players know the NIL deals will come at Georgia, but the schools shouldn’t have to pay for them to come to play. Kids should go where they want to play, and not whoever forks out the most money.

Georgia football isn’t just making history in this draft. They are shattering records and setting a new standard for this program. The Dawgs are here to stay, and this kind of draft class isn’t a one-time thing.
