Georgia softball set to play Ole Miss in 1st round of SEC Tournament
Georgia softball has quietly had a great 2022 season, and their strong year will continue into the postseason.
Today, the Bulldogs will play in the SEC Tournament, facing the No. 8 seed Ole Miss Rebels. This past weekend in Athens, these two played each other, and the Rebels took two out of three games from the Lady Dawgs.
A strong performance in the SEC Tournament can help propel the Dawgs to their 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament, where they will look to make a second straight appearance in the College World Series and avenge last season’s loss.
Georgia softball looks to make a deep run after a strong regular season in the postseason.
They’re currently the No. 9 seed in the tournament, which will take place in Gainesville, Fla., this year. Whoever wins in this matchup will face No. 1 seeded Arkansas on Thursday.
The Dawgs finished the regular season with a 40-15 overall record and a 12-12 in SEC play. Georgia also hit 100 home runs during the season, breaking the single season record set by the 2010 team. They were also the first SEC team to hit 100 home runs in a season since Tennessee did it back in 2015.
Sara Mosely leads the team with a .421 batting average. She is currently tied with Lacey Fincher for the most home runs on the team with 16. Jayda Kearney leads all hitters with 54 RBIs. Jaiden Fields, the sister of former Georgia and current Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, hit .326 with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs.
The pitching staff combined for a 3.94 team ERA as Madison Kerpics was arguably the best pitcher for Georgia. She finished the regular season with an 18-8 record, 3.02 ERA, and 158 strikeouts in over 157 innings pitched.
Coach Tony Baldwin is in his first season as the head coach of Georgia softball. The longtime Bulldog assistant coach had the tough task of replacing Lu Harris-Champer, who coached the team from 2001-2021 and retired at the end of last season.
During her tenure, she helped Georgia win two regular season SEC Championships and one SEC Tournament. She also led the Dawgs to 19 NCAA Tournaments, 11 Super Regional appearances, and five College World Series appearances.
You can catch the Lady Dawgs take on Ole Miss tonight on the SEC Network at 7:30 p.m.
