Georgia football wide receiver Adonai Mitchell will enter the 2022 season as a major breakout candidate.

Following an impressive true freshman season, Mitchell could be the next guy to take over the top spot in Georgia’s wide receiver depth chart. He reeled in 29 receptions for 426 yards and four touchdowns last season — impressive numbers for the former 3-star prospect.

Mitchell was not initially expected to see the field as much as he did, but injuries to key contributors like George Pickens allowed him to carve out a role as one of the team’s top receiving options.

He is best known by fans for producing one of the most memorable plays in Georgia history during the national championship. For many, watching him reel in the long touchdown with an Alabama defender draped all over him was the moment they began to think, “we’re actually going to do it this time.”

A 3-star true freshman receiver stepping in for injured starters and becoming a difference maker in the national championship is quite a concept. Maybe that one coach out west should take notes.

Being that impactful as a true freshman should have fans excited for what’s to come. With the recent departures of Pickens to the NFL and Jermaine Burton to the transfer portal, Mitchell could potentially rival Brock Bowers for the highest targeted player on the team.

With the excitement around Mitchell’s budding stardom continuing to grow, let’s take a look at what he brings to the table in 2022.

Strengths

Mitchell is one of the most fluid receivers Georgia has seen in recent years in terms of his movement and route running abilities. Pairing that with a 6-foot-4 frame makes for a lethal threat in all areas of the field, but especially in jump ball scenarios.

He has displayed impressive body control and the ability to adjust to the ball in midair. His combination of size and athleticism could translate to him becoming a textbook X receiver if he can bulk up a bit.

Mitchell’s attitude and confidence are also evident in watching him play. He carries himself well and seems to have some ‘dawg’ in him, as they say.

Weaknesses

Mitchell was a bit rusty entering last year, but it was expected. After reclassifying from the 2020 recruiting class to 2021, he was out of organized football for a year and had to get his legs back under him to begin his freshman season.

Overall, he could use fine-tuning to hone his skills and help him take that next step in year two. Becoming crisper in his route running could elevate his game to an elite level. Considering his already imposing frame, adding bulk would help him enhance his physicality and grow his game even more.

2022 Season Prediction for Adonai Mitchell

With a bigger role and a year of experience, Mitchell has the potential to blossom into a star in 2022.

While the departures of Pickens and Burton will allow him to slot in at the No.1 spot at receiver, the target competition created by the three-headed monster that Georgia has in the tight end room could prevent a true stat sheet stuffing season for Mitchell.

He will still be a key contributor for the defending champs, though. Expect Mitchell to haul in 40 receptions for 620 yards and six touchdowns in 2022.

These numbers are a bit of a conservative prediction and could very well be exceeded if he can burst into the star that fans are hoping to see. Still, with the amount of talent Georgia has on offense, stats like that from the second-year wideout would not be disappointing in the slightest.
