Georgia football: Tennessee game not being at night would be insult
No. 1 Georgia football takes on a red-hot No. 3 Tennessee team on Nov. 5 at home in Sanford Stadium. While the Dawgs have to take on Florida first, fans have already started discussing this matchup. One would think a top-5 matchup would be at night, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Unfortunately, it seems like this matchup will be at 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports because they have first pick that week among the SEC games. So that likely means the Dawgs will not have a night game in Sanford Stadium unless a miracle happens for the Georgia Tech game. It’s not Georgia’s fault that CBS wasted their night-game doubleheader earlier this season, but the best time for this matchup is under the lights, not in the afternoon.
While nothing is in stone yet, we can safely assume the Nov. 5 game will be at 3:30 p.m. because it’s the best SEC matchup that week. Now the Alabama-LSU game is the same week, so maybe another miracle can happen, and CBS choose them, but there are only so many games a network can do for a team.
Georgia football deserves a night game for Tennessee.
How does the defending national champion not have a home night game? It’s insulting to not only Georgia but college football in general. These 7 p.m. kick offs are prime time, and sure some could argue that the 3:30 p.m. slot is as well, but there is something different about night SEC games, and this one needs that atmosphere.
CBS should do the right thing and pick the Alabama-LSU matchup and let ESPN put this game as its 7 p.m. prime time slot. Before anyone tells me how this whole television thing works with football games — I know. However, it doesn’t mean I cannot have the opinion that Georgia should play at night for its biggest game of the season.
The Dawgs have seen a 3:30-4 p.m. kick off for most of its games this year, and while that is a solid time to play — night games hit differently. Sanford Stadium at night is an intimidating place, and the fact that this game will be at 3:30 p.m. is ridiculous.
There will be home field advantage anyway, but seeing Georgia fans light up Sanford Stadium and using the awesome lights they installed is something we all enjoy. However, it seems like no one wants to schedule Georgia a night game, and that just isn’t right. Maybe a miracle could happen, but regardless it’s an insult to college football to have this Nov. 5 meeting at 3:30 p.m.
