Georgia football: Brock Bowers is finally a Mackey Award finalist
Georgia football tight end Brock Bowers is a John Mackey Award finalist after getting left out finalist as a freshman. After getting snubbed, the honor may finally go to the best tight end in the country. What Bowers does on the field is unique, and not to discredit any of the other finalists, but he is a difference maker.
Last year as a freshman, he was the obvious choice, but not to the award voters. It’s no surprise that Bowers is a finalist again, but will being an underclassman discount him again? Hopefully not, because the kid deserves the recognition. Bowers is a team guy and wants to win, so this award isn’t on the top of the list, but if he is the best, he deserves the praise.
The Dawgs appreciate what he does for the team and know how blessed they are to have Bowers. Without Bowers, the Dawgs wouldn’t be reigning national champions or competing for another one this year.
Georgia football tight end Brock Bowers is the most obvious choice for the Mackey Award.
This year, Bowers has 46 catches for 645 yards and five touchdowns. While those numbers aren’t quite what his freshman ones were, Bowers is still worthy of this honor. He has improved his blocking in 2022 and has played a little more of a traditional tight end role. However, that shouldn’t matter, but it felt like it did and why he didn’t win in 2021.
The other two finalists this year are Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer and Iowa’s Sam LaPorta. Mayer has gotten a lot of love from the Mackey Award this season, so he is likely the biggest competition, but both guys are talented tight ends.
Bowers is an explosive playmaker that makes defenses shiver when they see him on the field. Opposing defenses know they must keep an eye on him when he is out there, or Bowers will burn them. He has done it a few times because some teams still haven’t figured out how to slow him down or stop him.
Georgia football fans deserve to see Bowers win this honor because he is, 100% without a doubt, the best tight end in the country. The postseason results don’t matter in the football award world, but Bowers will be part of the team that could make history, and the Mackey Award should want to attach itself to that.
