Georgia football may not publically be on the hunt for a running back in the transfer portal. Still, after South Carolina running back Marshawn Lloyd announced he was entering the portal, the Dawgs should be all over him.

With Kenny McIntosh gone after this season and the possibility of Kendall Milton declaring, the Dawgs could use another running back in that room. Sure they’re bringing in Roderick Robinson in the 2023 class right now, and they have Daijun Edwards, Branson Robinson and Andrew Paul — when a guy like Lloyd becomes available, you pitch to him.

He is an incredible running back that has the potential to be a great addition to the Dawgs. Lloyd is a stud, and Georgia uses running back by committee, so he would still be able to get valuable reps while getting those young guys even more familiar with the system.

Georgia football should be on the shortlist for transferring running back Marshawn Lloyd.

It’s not like Georgia’s running backs need to get more acquainted with the system, but when you have a veteran SEC running back like Lloyd, you make room for him. He has the right mindset and would make for a great fit. Plus, if Edwards sticks around, it’ll give him a guy to share the load with while Robinson and Paul pick up the steam behind them.

This predicament is all speculation, and Georgia may not even be interested, but Lloyd is a good back. Why not come to RBU? Georgia was one of the leaders for him during that 2020 class, but he chose to go to South Carolina, which is why I think the Dawgs could already be in the mix.

Lloyd is a redshirt sophomore and would have at least one season of eligibility left, but he is NFL-eligible, so who knows what could happen here. With South Carolina hiring a new offensive coordinator, the Gamecocks have seen some key playmakers hit the portal, including  Jaheim Bell, the star tight end. He is heading to Tallahassee to play for FSU, and now Lloyd is in the portal.

This season, he led the Gamecocks with 111 rushes for 573 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 12.3 yards a touch. Lloyd missed three games due to injury but still was a force for the Gamecocks. He rushed for 169 yards against Charlotte and 110 yards against Kentucky.  Lloyd has 175 carries for 801 yards and 10 scores through two seasons. He averaged 8.3 yards a touch in those two seasons.

The Dawgs would appreciate him not just as a running back but as a receiving threat too. Lloyd had 18 catches for 176 yards and two scores this season. Georgia likes using its backs in their passing game, so it’s another reason he would make a great fit in Athens.

Georgia may have a somewhat full running back room, but the Dawgs could find a spot for Lloyd, especially if the 2023 recruiting class doesn’t have two backs in it. The Dawgs could take two high school running backs, but with Lloyd now in play, why not push for him?
