Stetson Bennett is supposed to be preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft, but early Sunday morning, he was preparing to be released from jail.
According to a report from WFAA in Dallas, Tx, former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was arrested in the early morning hours on Sunday in Old East Dallas.
Bennett was allegedly banging on doors in the 1600 Tribeca Way area of Old East Dallas according to police, who determined he was intoxicated when the arrived on the scene in response to calls about the disturbance.
Why Bennett was knocking on doors in the area is not known as the time of this writing, and he is still awaiting release from the local city detention center.
This isn’t the first time Bennett has undergone scrutiny due to alcohol. After the 2022 National Championship Game, Bennett was seen drinking directly from a bottle of 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve bourbon and then was clearly still hungover the next morning during a television appearance on Good Morning America.
The 25-year-old Heisman finalist has become something of an icon to the Georgia fanbase and is getting ready for April’s 2023 NFL Draft, where he hopes to continue his playing career. Incidents like this are not catastrophic to a player’s draft stock but aren’t ignored either.
After completing the season with his second straight national championship, Bennett has been somewhat aloof, not wanting to speak to the press immediately following the game (making Scott Van Pelt his exception) and not attending the champions’ news conference the following day.
The Blackshear, Ga. native was often bashed by both the media and some fans as being overhyped and the benefit of a system as well as some stellar defenses. After completing the back-to-back title run with some impressive stat lines, he is regarded by some as the greatest Georgia Bulldog football player of all time.
We will update this story as more details are released, as well as any statements from Stetson Bennett himself if they are made.
