There are some who think the 2022 USC Trojans were lightning in a bottle and the product of a “quick-fix” by first-year Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley.

Abruptly leaving Oklahoma to take the USC job, Riley brought some of his best players along with him and one of them — Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams — proved to be the difference maker.

Riley is once again relying on the transfer portal to help rebuild this program, with 12 incoming transfers, ranking No. 3 among transfer groups in the country.

The Trojans are set up for success again in 2023, but will most certainly have some stiffer competition than they did last season. How far USC can go this season will largely depend on the improvement of the defense.
