Georgia Bulldogs NFL Draft bust No. 7: Deandre Baker
2019 NFL Draft, Round 1, Pick 30
New York Giants, 2019
Kansas City Chiefs, 2020-2021
Deandre Baker shot up the 2019 draft boards in a hurry following Georgia’s resurgence under Kirby Smart. Baker was looked at as a project by some teams and as a defensive secondary changer by others.
The Giants fell into the category of the latter and took Baker at No. 30 overall — their third pick of the first round — after taking quarterback Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence with the No. 17 pick.
The trouble for Baker began before his career could even get started. After a decent rookie season, he was arrested and charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm in May of 2020 and was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list that July.
The Giants waived Baker (who they had given up three draft picks to select) and moved on. The former Georgia standout tried to make a go of it with the Kansas City Chiefs but suffered a broken femur during a 2021 game against the Chargers, and never played in another game.
