Stetson Bennett’s college career was the story that Hollywood screenwriters dream of. And now the two-time national champion is heading to Hollywood after he was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Bennett has had his whole football career called into question and as he entered into the 2023 NFL Draft many opinions were that he wouldn’t be drafted at all. Which to be honest was nonsense.
And to be truthful getting a player with Bennett’s resume with the 128th pick of the draft seems like Sean McVay should have been wearing a ski mask to conceal the daylight robbery that the Rams got away with.
While the Colts spent a first-round pick on a quarterback who has started a total of 13 college football games, Bennett comes with 42 games worth of experience. This seems incredibly good value.
And lest we repeat the same old history of Bennett’s college career, he is a player who has overcome enough adversity to last a lifetime. He is a fighter and has significant experience. In fact, only four other quarterbacks in the history of college football have won back-to-back National Championships. Bennett lives in an exalted company.
Aside from his experience, Bennett has a drive that is unparalleled. He has been doubted at every stage of his career, even by his own coaching staff. You will recall that both Jamie Newman and JT Daniels rode into Athens with lofty reputations as defacto starting quarterbacks only for Bennett to win the job and see them off.
This is why Rams fans shouldn’t assume that Bennett is going to arrive in Los Angeles happy to be a backup. That’s not how he rolls. Of course, he joins up with another Georgia football legend in Matthew Stafford who is sure to give him a warm welcome.
While questions will remain as to how long that Stafford will continue to be the Rams quarterback, Bennett will push him all the way. This will be a fight worth watching and you would love to be a fly on that quarterback room wall.
Oh and have you ever thought about quarterbacks who have won a National Championship and a Superbowl? That list is narrowed to just two quarterbacks – Joe Namath and Joe Montana. Tell me that Bennett’s Hollywood career so far doesn’t have a happy ending.
