Georgia football vs Pittsburgh football

Overall record: 0-3-1
First meeting: Sept. 15, 1973
Last meeting: Jan. 1, 1982
Last score: 24-20, Pitt

Older Georgia fans will likely cringe at this one. The last time Georgia and Pitt met it was Georgia’s second opportunity in as many years to win a national title, and it was spoiled by Dan Marino and the Pitt Panthers.

Pitt is the only team on this list Georgia at least has a tie against, but a tie isn’t a win, so here we are.

In 1973, the Panthers and Bulldogs struggled to a 7-7 tie at Sanford Stadium, and then just two years later Pitt came visiting again and left Athens with a 19-9 win.

The next two meetings both occurred in the Sugar Bowl. Pitt was ranked No. 1 and Georgia No. 5 coming into the 1977 Sugar Bowl, with both teams having national title dreams. Pitt handed Georgia a lopsided 27-3 loss.

Then one of the most painful losses in Georgia’s history happened in the 1982 Sugar Bowl. Georgia was ranked No. 2 with only one loss on the season, a Week 3 loss to eventual national champion Clemson. The Dawgs needed to take care of business against Pitt and hope that Clemson would lose their Orange Bowl matchup with Nebraska.

Neither happened, and Georgia was denied a second consecutive national title.
